A total of 105 bodies have been recovered from the sea off Senegal in 2024 following canoe capsizings linked to irregular migration, Modou Diagne, permanent secretary of the Senegalese Interministerial Committee to Combat Irregular Migration, has said.
This figure does not include “those still lying at the bottom of the ocean,” Diagne said on Monday during the inauguration ceremony of the regional and departmental committees for combating irregular migration in Diourbel, central Senegal.
Diagne called for intensified awareness campaigns targeting young people.
He praised the efforts of the Senegalese government to multiply vocational training centers and promote agricultural projects to provide viable alternatives for youth and encourage them to remain in the country. Enditem
