A ceremony marking the arrival of the 22nd Chinese medical team in Cape Verde and the departure of the previous team was held here on Monday.
At the ceremony, Cape Verdean Minister of Health Jorge Figueiredo commended the Chinese embassy’s role in fostering “strong and fruitful cooperation” between the two countries and expressed Cape Verde’s willingness to integrate Chinese expertise in areas such as professional training, equipment maintenance, new technologies and the digitalization of the national health system.
Chinese Ambassador to Cape Verde Zhang Yang said that China is ready to strengthen cooperation and share policies and expertise so that Cape Verde can “gain more practical experience” in medicine and health.
According to the ambassador, the 22nd Chinese medical team comprises nine doctors, including specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and surgery.
Hu Yidi, deputy director of the health commission of China’s southwestern Sichuan Province, said the work of the Chinese medical teams in Cape Verde embodies the spirit of a China-Africa community with a shared future.
Hu said that the 21st Chinese medical team in Cape Verde has treated 17,187 patients over the past 18 months and provided the local population with high-quality medical service.
“Through your knowledge, dedication and teamwork, you have helped us grow as an institution, strengthen our services, support the training of our professionals and innovate in our discipline,” said Evandro Monteiro, chairman of the Agostinho Neto University Hospital in Praia, addressing the Chinese doctors.
The rotation of Chinese medical teams in Cape Verde, conducted about every two years, is part of a medical cooperation protocol signed in 1984. The program includes the regular dispatch of medical professionals, along with equipment donations and professional training support. Enditem
