5 students confirmed dead after boat capsizes in Ghana

At least five people have died after a boat capsized on the Black Volta River in Ghana’s Upper West Region, a local official told Xinhua on Saturday.

Osman Abdul-Latif Sinsew, Upper West regional director of the National Disaster Management Organization, said the victims were among 15 students from Lawra Senior High School who had gone jogging early Saturday morning.

Upon reaching the banks of the Black Volta near the community of Dikpe, 10 of the students, most of whom had never been on a river before, decided to cross the transboundary waterway, which separates Ghana and Burkina Faso.

“But the boat capsized in the middle of the journey. Three of the students, all males, managed to swim back to the riverbank, but seven, including five females, drowned,” Sinsew added.

According to Sinsew, rescue workers have retrieved five bodies, while search and rescue efforts are still underway to find the remaining two. Enditem
