Ghana is seeking deepened friendship and collaboration with China to implement the government’s flagship 24-hour economy program, according to Vice President Prof. Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, late Friday.
Speaking during the 76th anniversary of the founding of China and 65 years of establishing diplomatic relations with Ghana in Accra, the national capital, Opoku-Agyemang underscored the roles played by Chairman Mao and Kwame Nkrumah in promoting friendship between the West African and the Asian country.
She commended Beijing for the people-to-people exchange with Accra as well as the numerous infrastructural projects and urged deepening the relationship for a win-win partnership.
“We are implementing our 24-hour economy program, which emphasizes the creation of jobs, modernization, connectivity, export, and many more opportunities. This means, then, that the race has the potential to deepen our relationship and collaboration with China in many areas, including energy, renewable power, digital technology, trade facilitation within the African Continental Free Trade Area, and others. I would like to stress the importance of principles like mutual respect, a win-win partnership, and prosperity that reaches our most vulnerable,” said Opoku-Agyemang
The Ghanaian VP commended China for establishing Confucius Institutes in Ghana, the deployment of medical teams over the years, and the exchange of ideas and techniques and urged the need to maintain and build on the true partnership and friendship that exists between the two countries.
Chinese Ambassador to Ghana H.E. Tong Defa observed that since diplomatic relations were established by the two countries some 65 years ago, there has been a continued deepening of mutual trust and joint defense of common interests on global issues.
“China highly appreciates Ghana’s firm support on China’s core interests, including the one-China principle. China also supports Ghana’s adherence to the Pan-African tradition. In September 2024, our bilateral relations were elevated to a strategic partnership, which charted a new course for further development,” said Ambassador Tong.
The Chinese Ambassador further commended the Chinese community in the cocoa-growing, gold- and oil-producing country for their various roles in further deepening the friendship between the two countries.
“The development of China-Ghana relations and the progress and prosperity of our nation would be impossible without the hard work and commitment of the whole Chinese community and businesses here in Ghana. I hope that you will continue to operate in accordance with laws and regulations, enhance localization, fulfill corporate social responsibilities, and constantly make new contributions to the friendship and cooperation between our two countries,” he added.
As part of the celebration, the audience was treated to delightful Chinese cultural performances.
China and Ghana established diplomatic relations on July 5, 1960. Since then, Ghana has provided substantial diplomatic support to the PRC, with the PRC reciprocating with material support for Ghana’s development. In the 1960s, President Nkrumah lobbied for the PRC’s reinstatement in the United Nations. Enditem
