Commencing January 2026, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will issue individualized number plates, a statement confirmed on Friday.

According to the statement issued by the DVLA, the decision is to ensure security and safety on the roads.

“In an effort to ensure security and safety on our roads, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority would from January 2026, begin issuing vehicle license plates in the names of individuals,” read the statement.

The Authority explained that once implemented, every single owner is entreated to see their vehicle numbers as their personal numbers with additional responsibility of protecting same.

What this means the DVLA further explained that the vehicle number in the possession of an individual belongs to the individual who has a responsibility to take off the number plate at a time of change in ownership.

“This is to enable the Authority and security agencies within the transport ecosystem link a unique vehicle number to an individual,” it added. Enditem
