Cameroon gov’t rejects opposition candidate’s self-proclaimed victory in presidential election

Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji on Tuesday rejected opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s claim of victory in Sunday’s presidential election, calling it unconstitutional and “an act of extreme gravity.”

In a statement, Atanga Nji said Tchiroma seeks to disrupt the electoral process. “Public order will be maintained and reinforced nationwide so that the electoral process proceeds peacefully to its conclusion,” he added.

Early Tuesday, Tchiroma said in a televised address that the results showed an “overwhelming victory” for him.

“Our victory is clear. It must be respected. The people have chosen,” said Tchiroma, a former government spokesman who resigned to run against President Paul Biya, who has been the country’s leader for 43 years.

According to the Cameroon Electoral Code, the results of the election will be proclaimed by the Constitutional Council within no more than 15 days of the close of the poll.  Enditem
