Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on Tuesday officially swore in two newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs), Bernard Bediako Baidoo and Prof. Alidu Seidu, for the Akwatia and Tamale Central Constituencies.

The ceremony marked the formal induction of the two National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators following their recent by-elections in their respective constituencies.

Hon. Baidoo was elected MP for Akwatia after securing 18,199 votes in a competitive by-election. The seat became vacant after the untimely passing of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Political Science Lecturer Prof. Alidu Seidu was declared the winner of the by-election after running unopposed in the Tamale Central Constituency.

He replaces the late MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who tragically died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, at Sikaman, near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking after administering the oaths of allegiance and office, Speaker Bagbin congratulated the two lawmakers and reminded them of the weight of the responsibility they now carry.

He urged them to honor their oath, uphold the dignity of the House, and let their service be marked by integrity and accountability.

With the swearing in of the two MPs, the governing NDC caucus in Parliament now has 185 MPs. Four other independent candidates have also declared their decision to do business with the NDC MPs, giving the John Mahama-led administration an overwhelming majority in Parliament.

The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds the remaining 87 seats. Enditem
