Former National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Awentami Paul Afoko has declared his intention to contest for the same position in the upcoming national officers’ election, according to a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to him, the decision to contest follows consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the party’s founding values and ideals.
Mr. Afoko observed that his focus is now on the future of the party, which stands energized, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people.
“After extensive reflection and encouragement from many well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party, I am honored to formally announce my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman in the upcoming election of national officers,” read the statement.
The NPP’s former National Chairman further observed that he will, in the coming weeks, share his vision, ideas, and plans to lead the opposition party with integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Paul Afoko was elected Chairman of Ghana’s largest party in 2014, replacing prominent lawyer Jake Obetsebi Lamptey.
In September 2015, he was suspended by the National Executive Committee of the party after being accused by party supporters of working against the party’ flagbearer chances of winning the 2016 elections.
The NPP will hold a presidential primary on January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2028 general election.
The party will subsequently organize a national officers’ election. Enditem
