Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday directed the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to suspend its ongoing recruitment exercise before the commencement of the exercise.

According to the president, the suspension would allow for a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure future recruitment processes are conducted under safer and more controlled conditions.

President Mahama described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and stressed the need for reforms to prevent further casualties.

“I have asked the leadership of the Armed Forces to temporarily halt the recruitment exercise and conduct a full-scale investigation. We must take a fresh approach to ensure such unfortunate incidents do not happen again,” said the Ghanaian leader.

Six people lost their lives on Wednesday in a military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium before the commencement of the exercise, according to a statement by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

According to a statement signed by Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General, Public Relations, preliminary investigations indicate the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates ahead of scheduled screening at about 0620 hours.
