Senegal’s Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Thursday that deposed Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo had “safely arrived” in Senegal earlier in the day.
The ministry said the Senegalese government dispatched a special aircraft to Bissau, Guinea-Bissau’s capital, to facilitate the evacuation operation, enabling Embalo to reach Senegal safely.
According to the statement, since unrest broke out in Guinea-Bissau, Senegal has maintained communication with all relevant parties under the direct leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Faye, on Thursday, joined an extraordinary virtual summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the situation in Guinea-Bissau. The summit agreed to set up a mediation committee composed of several member states, including Senegal, the statement said.
ECOWAS leaders the same day suspended Guinea-Bissau from all of the bloc’s decision-making bodies, according to a communique issued after the summit.
On Wednesday, Guinea-Bissau’s armed forces announced that they had seized full control of state power to counter what they described as attempts to destabilize the country. Senior military officer Horta Inta-A was sworn in as transitional president the following day. Enditem
