The removal of the Bawku Naaba, Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre, by the government cannot extinguish his Chieftaincy status, according to the Nayiri of the Mamprugu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Naa Bohogu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, on Friday.
In a statement released here, the Nayiri emphasised that the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana guarantees the institution of Chieftaincy and prohibits any authority or persons from altering it unless done so according to custom.
The Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom’s statement comes on the back of the Bawku Mediation Report as submitted to President John Dramani Mahama by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II-led team.
“The government is hereby reminded that the arrest, detention, or removal of the Bawku Naaba, Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre, regardless of his location or the condition of his detention, constitutes a direct affront to the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. His arrest does not and cannot extinguish or diminish his lawful chieftaincy status,” read the statement.
The Nayiri called on the government to cease all unconstitutional interference in chieftaincy affairs in the area and realign its actions with the constitution, rule of law, respect for traditional authority, and the requirements of genuine peacebuilding.
He condemned the killings of innocent Mamprusi citizens and injury to several others under the guise of enforcing the Otumfuo Mediation Report and warned that the use of “unconstitutional force cannot and will not resolve this dispute.” Enditem
