Russia and Venezuela are maintaining their strategic partnership and cooperation, Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov said Saturday following a meeting with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil.
Moscow stands in support and solidarity with the Venezuelan people, the ambassador told RIA Novosti, noting that the Treaty on Strategic Partnership and Cooperation between Russia and Venezuela remains the guiding framework for the development of bilateral relations.
He highlighted the legitimacy of Caracas’ demands for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were captured during an armed U.S. aggression and then transferred to the United States on Jan. 3.
The ambassador added that contacts between Russia and Venezuela have not ceased “for even a minute.”
The Treaty on Strategic Partnership and Cooperation between Russia and Venezuela was signed in May 2025 and entered into force in October of the same year. It broadens bilateral exchanges in political and economic areas such as energy, mining, transportation and communications, as well as cooperation in security, counterterrorism and combating extremism.
