A member of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has been shot by armed thugs during an anti-galamsey operation, a statement announced on Tuesday.
The statement, signed by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Media Relations Officer for the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the incident occurred in a bush along the Subinkurom-Kyeremasu stretch in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region.
According to the statement, the armed thugs who were hiding in the bushes opened fire on the NAIMOS personnel upon sighting them, leading to an exchange of fire.
“The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat wishes to inform the public that earlier today, Tuesday, 20th January 2026, a member of its taskforce was shot in the thigh by armed assailants during a routine anti-galamsey operation,” read the statement.
In the milieu, a NAIMOS member was shot in the thigh, while an armed thug was also shot but was pronounced dead on arrival at the St. Matthew Catholic Hospital.
The injured personnel, according to the statement, was sent to the Matthew Catholic Hospital, where he is said to be responding to treatment.
NAIMOS assured the public that it will not relent in its efforts, and it remains committed to fighting the scourge of illegal mining and urges all stakeholders to continue to support its operations. Enditem
