Uganda marks 40th Liberation Day as Museveni pledges wealth creation, stability

Uganda on Monday marked the 40th anniversary of Liberation Day, commemorating the victory in 1986 when the ruling National Resistance Movement, led by President Yoweri Museveni, seized power after a five-year guerrilla war.

Museveni presided over national celebrations and a military parade at the Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala, the country’s capital.

The event, broadcast live nationwide, celebrated Uganda’s journey toward stability and self-determination and was held under the theme, “A Tribute to the Patriots Who Ushered in the Fundamental Change.”

Museveni, who secured a seventh five-year presidential term in the Jan. 15 general elections, said his government would prioritize inclusive wealth creation, free education, and industrialization, among other goals.

“We are going to do much more. We are celebrating a very big victory in politics. In the new term, our priorities are clear: safeguard peace and security, eradicate household poverty, strengthen unity, enforce discipline in governance, and support wealth creators to grow our economy,” Museveni said.

“Uganda will remain peaceful, stable, and focused on progress. I thank you all and wish you a happy Liberation Day,” he added.

During the ceremony, a total of 33 Ugandan personalities were awarded medals in recognition of their distinguished service and contributions to the country’s liberation struggle.

According to the national organizing committee, thousands of ruling party members, supporters, and dignitaries, including foreign diplomats, attended the celebrations.  Enditem
