Transitional President of Guinea-Bissau Horta Inta-A on Friday signed a presidential decree in the capital, Bissau, appointing Ilidio Vieira Te as prime minister, who will also concurrently serve as finance minister.
The appointment takes immediate effect, the Presidency’s Office of Communication and Public Relations said in a statement, adding that Inta-A made the decision “in the exercise of his powers and responsibilities.”
Born in 1983 in the Biombo Region of western Guinea-Bissau, Te is a member of the Social Renewal Party, the country’s third-largest political party. He served as finance minister from July 2022 until the recent political shift in the country.
During this year’s presidential election, Te was national campaign director for the No Kumpu Guine coalition, an alliance of several political parties that endorsed deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embalo as their candidate.
On Wednesday, Guinea-Bissau’s armed forces announced that they had seized full control of state power to counter what they described as attempts to destabilize the country. Inta-A was sworn in as transitional president the following day.
The sudden political shift occurred only a day before the release of presidential election results and stemmed from sharp tensions among competing political forces, according to analysts. Enditem
