Korle Bu medical laboratory workers begin sit-down strike Wednesday

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Chapter of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers Union (MLPWU) on Wednesday commenced a sit-down strike over unpaid salary arrears, according to a notice of industrial action released here.

According to the group, the action is being embarked upon following management’s failure to address their demands regarding the management of the hospital’s central laboratory and critical leadership and operational challenges affecting laboratory services.

The notice, signed by John Kofi Nakoja, Chairman of the MLPWU, Korle Bu Chapter announced that their industrial action will be carried out in two phases.

Phase one, according to the notice involves the commencement of a sit-down strike in all laboratories across the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, no OPD cases will be handled during the period, as well as maintaining only skeletal staff to handle emergency cases.

The rest are samples that may require follow-up beyond February 8, 2026, will not be accepted and the Blood Bank and Laboratory services at the Cardiothoracic Centre will run normally for clients under intensive care.

According to the laboratory workers, phase two of the industrial action, which will commence on February 9, 2026, it will withdraw all medical laboratory services at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, including the Blood Bank and the Cardiothoracic Centre and possible escalation of the strike by the national union.

The statement urged members to remain disciplined and strictly comply with the directive until further instructions.

Meanwhile, the industrial action is expected to adversely affect health services at the hospital. Enditem
