The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday upheld the election of former Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election.
Addressing the media at the party headquarters in the Ghanaian capital after the Totobi Quakyi-led three-member committee submitted its report, General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said the NDC was unable to annul the parliamentary primaries, though the committee had recommended so.
He explained that the party could not have arrived at the said conclusion owing to time constraints of filing their candidate with the Electoral Commission (EC) by Wednesday Feb. 11, and also constitutional challenges, as any of the candidates could institute a legal action against the party.
The NDC General Secretary, however, stated that there were various practices that characterised the election and that the party had recommended to the president to take action against all such persons holding government positions.
Mr. Kwetey also disclosed that the party had expanded the Totobi Quakyi committee to a seven-member committee to make appropriate recommendations that will guide future internal elections of the NDC to prevent acts of vote-buying and vote-selling.
With Baba Jamal cleared, the NDC is expected to officially file his nomination with the EC to contest the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for March 3 on the ticket of the ruling party. Enditem
