A major drug distribution base operating in the New Legon area has been uncovered by a police patrol team, according to our sources.
A routine patrol in the Legon–Adenta Municipality quickly turned into a major narcotics breakthrough after alert observations by officers of the Ghana Police Service exposed a hidden drug distribution base operating quietly in New Legon.
On the morning of February 24, 2026, at about 10:15 a.m., a Ghana Police Canine Patrol Team on surveillance duty noticed a motor rider exiting a partially fenced structure under suspicious circumstances.
The unusual movement immediately drew the attention of the officers, who decided to monitor and intervene to assess the situation.
The patrol team was led by Inspector Alex Agyei (Officer-in-Charge) and supported by G/Sgt Akoto Adu Boahen, G/Cpl Isaac Paa Kwesi Okom, G/Cpl Diamond Yao Normeshie, PW/Cpl Angela Assumin, and driver G/Cpl Brownford Ofori, who conveyed the team in a service vehicle with registration number GP 614.
Their swift response prevented what police believe could have been the continued large-scale circulation of narcotics within the area.
Upon entering the premises, the officers encountered two individuals — Faridatu Sumaila and Mashawoud Malik — who identified themselves as he owners of the house. Initial inspection of the environment raised a strong suspicion that the building was being used for illegal activities rather than normal residential purposes.
A trained narcotic detection dog was deployed to conduct a comprehensive search in the presence of the suspects. The search uncovered large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, including a full pack of wrapped compressed leaves, two buckets filled with dried leaves, 80 plastic-wrapped portions, and two paper-wrapped portions.
The scale and packaging of the substances suggested organized retail distribution rather than personal use. Further items recovered strengthened this suspicion.
Police retrieved a half carton of Codeine syrup, packets of Tramadol, Rohypnol tablets, five packets of cigarettes, two packs of cigars, a weighing scale, wrapping materials, and two locally made drinks suspected to be infused with narcotic substances — clear indicators of a structured drug peddling operation.
During questioning, both Faridatu Sumaila and Mashawoud Malik admitted ownership and distribution of the substances.
To obstruct the operation, the suspects reportedly offered GH₵20,000 to the police team as a bribe. The officers rejected the offer, maintaining professional conduct and preserving the integrity of the operation.
The matter was immediately escalated to ASP Joseph Awuni, Director, for further action.
The suspects were arrested and remain in police custody together with all recovered exhibits, while investigations continue toward prosecution. Enditem
