US President Donald Trump said he congratulated Spain after their 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, speaking to reporters before returning to Washington DC from New Jersey on Sunday.
“I spoke to Spain, and I congratulated them on having a great team. […] I really spoke to a lot of people,” he said.
Asked about reported ‘tension’ with Spain, Trump replied, “I have no tension. I have no tension with anybody.”
He also praised both finalists, saying Spain deserved their victory after a tightly contested match.
“I would say Spain played better, really, but they both played well. I mean, they got to the finals, and it was very exciting, actually. It looked like Spain dominated, but it was a very close match,” Trump noted.
Spain claimed their second World Cup title after beating Argentina 1-0 at New York New Jersey Stadium. Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute to seal victory for La Roja.
The comments came after Trump threatened to cut trade ties with Madrid and described the Spanish as ‘bad people’ after Spain refused to allow Washington to use its military bases for operations against Iran and declined to increase defence spending.
