Bagbin calls for fair systems for Africa, Global South countries

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on Wednesday called for a fairer international global order to enable African and Global South countries to develop and not to be given handouts.

Delivering a keynote address during the 10th Ghana International Trade and Finance Conference (GITFiC) on the 3rd Global Debt Initiative, Bagbin emphasized that with such fair systems, the African continent and the Global South would be able to chart their development paths and actually develop.

He called for a coordinated global framework, which requires the support and input of multilateral institutions, private lenders, and development partners to find ways to create a fair and just global system that enables all countries to develop without unreasonable debt burdens.

Bagbin urged citizens of African and Global South nations to actively contribute to their countries’ development, especially in light of the debt traps that threaten their nations.

“For how long can Africa continue to borrow from the future to pay for the past? That is what this whole thing is about. Debt is not just a financial pressure; it’s a question of development and human dignity,” he stressed.

United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator for Ghana, Zia Choudhury pledged the preparedness of the global body to continue supporting Ghana’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“We will support the country to help bring evidence to policy discussions, to support cooperation across institutions, and to keep attention on the people whom economic policy is meant to serve. That is the average person from Ghana,” Zia pledged.  Enditem
