Ethiopia’s military displayed weapons and equipment it said were captured from Tigrayan forces during recent fighting, as Addis Ababa accused neighbouring Eritrea of supporting insurgents and warned of its right to self-defence on Friday.
Footage shows weapons, drones, and other military equipment on display at the Qallitti Centre, where military officers and civilian officials gathered to inspect the collection.
“Eritrea must immediately and unconditionally cease harbouring remnants of TPLF (Tigray People’s Liberation Front) leaders, other insurgent elements and fugitives, and all forms of cooperation with groups seeking to undermine Ethiopia’s national security,” stated Meles Alem, Director General for Europe and America Affairs at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Ethiopia retains the deterrent right of self-defence, subject to the applicable requirements of necessity and proportionality,” he added.
The Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) declared it had seized the displayed equipment from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The exhibition comes amid renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia, where federal forces and Tigrayan fighters have clashed in recent months. On November 5-6, Ethiopian troops and military equipment were reported moving towards Rama in central Tigray.
The latest escalation threatens the Pretoria peace agreement, which ended the 2020-2022 Tigray war.
