President Mahama launches 2025 national tree planting

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday launched the 2025 national tree planting program as part of activities to commemorate World Environment Day.

Under the programme, the government seeks to plant 30 million tree seedlings by the end of June and involve school-age children in tree planting to boost the country’s afforestation efforts.

According to Mahama the one tree per child initiative is a nationwide programme that would engage every school-going age Ghanaian child in planting and nurturing at least one tree.

“These are trees that will stabilize our soils, cool our cities, absorb carbon dioxide, and restore our degraded ecosystems,” the president said.

More importantly, he said each tree would serve as a lesson in responsibility, sustainability, and civic pride for the children and adults planting them.

The president stressed that there is a relation between plastic pollution and deforestation “Because they both stem from the exact root cause of treating the environment as an afterthought.”

“Addressing both demands a fundamental shift in how we view development, placing sustainability, resilience, and equity at the center of our development paradigm,” he added.

The president announced that the government is introducing actions to end the menace of plastic waste and deforestation.

He said the government has placed the environment at the heart of Ghana’s development strategy, created the ministry of climate, and   appointed a minister for climate change and sustainability to integrate environmental considerations across all sectors.

The government has also introduced the national plastics management policy that requires manufacturers and importers to take responsibility for the life cycle of the plastics that they produce and place on the market, added the president.

He was hopeful that these actions would sustain public momentum and strengthen the national commitment to ecological renewal.
