Chief advocates institution of bye-laws to punish irresponsible fathers

By Robert Ayanful

The Chief of Brofoyedur and Asihen of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area in the Central Region, Nana Esuon Abonyi Kwaata II has called for the introduction of bye-laws by Chiefs across the country to punish fathers who shirk their responsibility in taking care of their children.

According to him, this will help curb the problem of irresponsible fathers in the society.

Nana Esuon Abonyi Kwaata II who made the call in an interview with the media debunked the assertion held by some that the problem is as a result of poverty.

He emphasized that some fathers who have the means to afford taking care of their children sometimes fail to do so because of misunderstanding with their spouses.

The Chief of Brofoyedur revealed that the problem of irresponsible fatherhood is a character which cuts across, irrespective of one’s social status, but stressed that it is quite common in the rural areas where some fathers have the notion that the child will after all look out for him when they grow up.

He further hinted that six out of even ten fathers picked at random are irresponsible, a situation he described as worrisome.

Nana Kwaata II further indicated that children are closer to their mothers than fathers because the former tend to spend more time with their children while the latter work to fend for the family. Enditem
