Several soldiers were killed and at least four others injured and hospitalized in attacks by suspected bandits on military bases in the country’s northern region on Tuesday, the Nigerian army said Wednesday.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the army said bandits in a three-pronged attack hit two military bases in the northern states of Niger and Kaduna, noting that land and air troops responded to the ambushes, “eliminating” the attackers.
“Sadly, some gallant warriors paid the supreme price in the day-long battles,” the statement said, adding that the injured soldiers were evacuated for treatment of their gunshot wounds.
The army did not disclose the exact casualty figure, while local media reported that at least 20 soldiers were killed, citing credible sources.
For several months, Nigeria’s northern region has been under intense attack by bandits and terror groups, wreaking havoc in local communities and military formations. The terrorists have reportedly improved their capabilities with new technology, including drones, to carry out attacks. Enditem
