Kotoko fights back to beat Hearts 2-1 to lift 2025 President’s Cup

Kumasi Asante Kotoko came from a goal down to defeat arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 to lift the 2025 President’s Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium in the Ghanaian capital on Sunday.

Having beaten the Kumasi-based club in recent President’s Cup, Hearts were determined to win this year’s one and began the match on a high note.

Hamza Issah opened the scoring for Hearts of Oak in the 27th minute of the first half, capitalising on a mistake by Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara.

Despite Hearts of Oak’s dominance in the first half, Kotoko responded strongly in the second half. Defender Konadu Yiadom turned a cross into his net to bring the Porcupine Warriors level.

Moments later, Kwame Opoku punished poor defending with a simple finish to make it 2-1.

Hearts thought they had equalised late on, but their goal was ruled out for offside, which sparked protest from fans, with missiles thrown onto the pitch.

Emmanuel Amankwa had a penalty awarded to the Accra-based club saved by Mohammed Camara, thereby sealing a 2-1 win for the Porcupine Warriors over the Phobians.

President John Dramani Mahama, in whose honour the match was played, was in attendance.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko have won nine President’s Cup titles so far, as against Hearts of Oak’s six. Enditem
