MTN Ghana, SMEGA unveil national awards to spotlight Ghana’s top SMEs

MTN Ghana, in collaboration with the SME Ghana Awards (SMEGA), has officially launched the 2025 edition of the SMEGA Awards — a national recognition scheme honouring the outstanding achievements of Ghana’s micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The launch, held under the theme “Sustaining Ghana SMEs in a Globally Competitive Market,” brings renewed focus to innovation, business resilience, and readiness for global competitiveness.

The SMEGA Awards were established to celebrate entrepreneurial excellence and impact across diverse sectors. With 18 competitive categories and five non-competitive recognitions, the awards aim to spotlight the crucial role SMEs play in Ghana’s economy.

Speaking at the launch, Angela Mensah-Poku, Chief Enterprise Business Officer of MTN Ghana, described the initiative as “an effort close to our hearts,” noting that SMEs remain the heartbeat of Ghana’s progress and the future giants of Africa.

“Today, we are united by one message: SMEs deserve our recognition, our investment, and our collective commitment—not just here, but across the globe,” she said.

She emphasized that the awards are not just about trophies but about “telling the real stories of resilience, innovation, and sacrifice.” She also reiterated MTN’s commitment to driving sustainability and digital transformation for local businesses.

Kwesi Ofori Junior, Executive Director of SMEGA, outlined the rigorous award process, including entry submissions, detailed assessments, and final evaluations by an expert jury to ensure fairness and transparency.

He announced 18 award categories, including the SME Best Overall Award, Women Entrepreneur Award, Rising Star Award, SME Media Reportage Award, Digitalization & Technology Adoption Award, High Impact Award, Industry Shapers Award, and Brand Discovery Award.

Additionally, five special honorary recognitions will be introduced to celebrate individuals and organizations making exceptional contributions to Ghana’s SME landscape.

Highlighting the Rising Star Award, Ofori noted its transformative purpose—to spotlight promising businesses that have grown through SMEGA’s past interventions.

He praised MTN Ghana’s long-standing support, saying:

“MTN believes in the potential of Ghana’s SMEs. We are proud to have them as a partner in this shared vision of discovering the next global business leaders.”

He encouraged eligible SMEs to submit nominations via www.smeghanaawards.com from 10th July to 15th August 2025.

Also present at the launch, Margaret Ansei, CEO of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), described the initiative as more than an award—it is a “movement that inspires and shapes the dreams of entrepreneurs across Ghana.”

She called for greater collective effort in building a thriving SME sector that can compete on the global stage, highlighting the need for innovation, partnerships, and strong institutional support.

“Let us continue to empower our SMEs to rise, thrive, and lead in the global economy,” she urged.

With the 2025 SMEGA Awards officially underway, expectations are high to recognize the businesses that are not just surviving, but shaping Ghana’s economic future.
