Cameroon validates 12 candidates for presidential election

Cameroon’s Constitutional Council has validated 12 candidates for the presidential election scheduled for Oct. 12.

The council made this decision on Tuesday after hearing petitions from 35 politicians whose application files had been disqualified by the electoral body, Elections Cameroon (Elecam).

Elecam initially approved 13 out of 83 presidential hopefuls, but the council disqualified Hilaire Zipang of the Progressive Movement party, reducing the final candidate list to 12.

According to the council’s ruling, the petition of key opposition leader Maurice Kamto was also rejected because his party had registered more than one candidate.

Kamto, a former government official, came in second during the 2018 presidential election.  Enditem
