Ghana mourns eight involved in tragic military helicopter crash

Ghana on Thursday began a three-day mourning period announced by the presidency following the military helicopter crash, leading to the death of eight persons, including two cabinet ministers.

With the official commencement of the period of mourning, all national flags are flying at half-mast across the country in honor of the fallen Ghanaians who died in serving their nation.

All eight persons who were on board the GAF Z9 helicopter heading towards Obuasi before the disaster include Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah- Minister for Defence, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP)-Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.

The rest are Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate for the Obuasi East Constituency, Squadron leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Since the incident occurred, several persons, including former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed deep sorrow, describing the incident as a devastating loss for the nation.

Former Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, described the news as heart-wrenching, with Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, expressing shock, saying, “I am in ruthless pain.”

Tributes are pouring in from both the local and international community, affirming their solidarity with the government and people of Ghana in this difficult moment in the history of the country.
