“Stop internal bickering, focus campaign on issues, forward-looking policies” – NPP elders to aspirants

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) presidential primary early next year, the National Council of Elders has met with all aspirants who will be contesting the election, according to a statement issued on Thursday.

Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang reminded the five aspirants their utterances carry weight and could serve as ammunition for their political opponents, hence admonishing them to stop attacking themselves.

He urged them to redirect their energies towards campaign-based issues that focus on coming out with time-tested policies that will address the challenges confronting the people of Ghana.

The leadership of the NPP Council of Elders urged the aspirants to impress upon their supporters, particularly on social media, to desist from insults, name-calling, and divisive rhetoric.

The meeting also confirmed the establishment of an ad hoc committee to receive petitions and concerns from aspirants, particularly on matters relating to denigrating comments by colleagues or actions that may bring the image and name of the party into disrepute.

As part of forging party unity, the committee will also monitor the utterances of the aspirants and their supporters and, where necessary, refer such matters to the Party’s Disciplinary Committee for appropriate action.

The mechanism, according to the party, is to provide a structured and impartial channel for redress, thereby reducing the tendency for aspirants to resort to the media in addressing personal attacks or grievances.

On their part, the aspirants reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to party unity and pledged to conduct campaigns in a peaceful and decorous manner. They emphasized a free and fair process leading to the primary and assured the Council of Elders of their resolve to focus on issues, avoid insults, and work together in the interest of the party.

The opposition New Patriotic Party will hold a presidential primary on January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2028 general election.

So far, five presidential hopefuls, including former General Secretary Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) Kennedy Agyapong, and MP for Abetifi Dr. Bryan Acheampong, have filed their nominations to contest the election.

The rest are former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. End item
