The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed the closure of the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region, according to a statement released here late Saturday.

The statement, signed by Superintendent George Peprah Mills, Staff Officer in the Eastern Region for the Public Affairs Unit, says the IGP has also withdrawn all police personnel from the station.

“The Eastern Regional Police Command would like to inform the public that following attacks on the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region by some youth of the town, the Inspector-General of Police has directed the withdrawal of all police personnel stationed at Kukurantumi and the close down of the police station,” read the statement.

According to the police, preliminary investigation indicates that on September 21, 2025, at about 7.00 a.m. local time, some youth in Kukurantumi attacked the Kukurantumi Police Station and the barracks with stones, clubs, and other implements and attempted to set the building on fire following the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, aka D-ball, who had been arrested for a case of unlawful entry and stealing and was on admission at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi.

Following the tension in the town, a police reinforcement team has been called in to restore calm and order.

The Eastern Regional Police Command observed that it has engaged the family of the deceased and other community leaders and assured them of a thorough investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department, according to the police, have commenced investigations into the matter involving the death of the suspect.

The police have urged the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence. End item
