New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Ing. Francis Addai-Nimoh has decided not to contest the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January next year, according to a statement on Wednesday.
The statement, signed by him and cited by the Ghana Eye Report, cited four main reasons for his decision.
“Following broad consultations, advice from my team members, and careful reflections on the current circumstances of the party, I have decided not to contest the NPP presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026,” read the statement.
Among the reasons include what he describes as inappropriate timing for the conduct of the presidential primary, the top-down approach adopted by the party to conduct internal contests, the seeming inclination and bias of party executives towards one candidate, as well as the monetization of the nomination and filing fees charged by the party.
“These factors, I believe, undermine the foundations of our internal democratic culture and place unethical emphasis on money rather than competence and winnability,” added the statement.
He, however, wished all the aspirants well in their endeavors.
The NPP will hold a presidential primary next year, and already, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) Kennedy Agyapong, and MP for Abetifi Dr. Bryan Acheampong have filed nominations to contest the flagbearer race.
Former Vice President and the party’s candidate in the 2024 general election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutuwm are also expected to file their nominations ahead of the primaries. Enditem
