African countries urged to leverage Chinese green energy technology to boost industrialization

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

African countries can take advantage of Chinese green energy technology to boost industrialization drives; this is according to Alfred Schipke, Director of the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore, on Thursday.

In an interview after the launch of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) publication titled “Africa-China Linkages: Building Deeper and Broader Connections,” he said the continent can, as a first step, start by taking advantage of China’s available green energy technology while developing its own green energy resources, especially with solar, for development.

“China is now leading in green technology, producing equipment starting from solar panels and other things at prices that are extremely low. Therefore, for this region, it is sensible to utilize China’s green technology while simultaneously working on developing your own economy.

If Africa can produce energy reliably and cheaper, “that would have humongous spillovers for small and medium enterprises that currently are confronted with high energy prices,” added Schipke.

Director of Governance and Administration at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Samuel Darkwa, said China and Africa have a lot in common, urging countries on the continent to learn the lesson of China’s trajectory to improve the lives of their people.

The executive director of the Africa-China Center for Policy and Advisory, Paul Frimpong, commended Schipke and the team for their new publication, which shed light on China-Africa relations and debunked some of the myths about the ties between China and Africa. Enditem
