Aggrieved NDC members lock up Tema NHIS District office over ‘improper’ appointment

Aggrieved members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tema Central Constituency locked up the offices of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at Community 8 on Tuesday morning to protest what they describe as the improper appointment of the District Manager.

According to the group, they were registering their anger and frustration at the appointment of someone outside the Tema Central and East Constituencies as the District Manager of the NHIS in Tema, after working hard to bring the party to power.

Led by the Constituency Chairman, Benjamin Djakumah, Constituency Secretary, Henry Davidson Aryee, and Constituency Organizer Razak Mutawakilu, the NDC members drove workers of the scheme who had reported for work peacefully before locking up the offices.

Addressing a press conference later, Henry Davidson Aryee explained to the media that the Executives in the Constituency have been taken aback by the appointment of an unknown person to head the NHIS District office in Tema.

He stressed that there are several persons in the constituency who worked hard for the party before the 2024 general elections, with the requisite qualifications, who could have been appointed.

The Constituency Secretary emphasized that they would continue with their protest until the appointment was reversed and proper consultation carried out for the right person within their area to be appointed.

Meanwhile, investigations conducted by the Ghana Eye Report have hinted that the Mayor of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, single-handedly appointed the District Manager of the NHIS without consulting the NDC Executives in the constituency.

When contacted for her side of the story, Special Aide to the Tema Mayor told Ghana Eye Report that her boss had just arrived at the office and would respond to the issue in due course. Enditem
