Agona Swedru: Chiefs, police clamp down on drug peddlers

The Nimfahen and Regent of Agona Swedru, Nana Kweku Esieni V, and other chiefs, in collaboration with the personnel from the Ghana Police Service, mounted a campaign in the town to clamp down on drug peddling and abuse.

As part of the exercise, over forty bottles of locally brewed gin, or ‘sobolo,’ suspected to be mixed with some chemically produced drugs such as what has become known as “RED” and herbs suspected to be cannabis, were last week confiscated at a single spot in a swoop.

This was disclosed by the regent, Nana Kweku Esieni, during the launching of the homecoming festival celebration of the town.

According to him, the herbs are also suspected to be used to prepare toffees and also mixed with energy drinks like Rush, which makes the user high when taken.

The Nimfahen observed that the high intake of these substances in the town, especially among the youth, is ascending at a faster rate, a situation he said does not only pose a challenge to the future of the youths but also remains a matter of grave concern to the traditional leaders and the society as a whole.

He stressed that the country’s future is bleak with the increasing rate of abuse of drug substances by the youth and has therefore called for a concerted effort by all to help fight the menace.

Nana Esieni V hinted that as part of their efforts to fight the menace, the traditional authorities will use the occasion of the homecoming celebration to embark on massive education on drug substances and abuse in the schools to drum home the dangers of the abuse of drugs and their related consequences.

Agona Swedru is said to be gradually becoming a hot spot of drug peddling and drug abuse in recent times, where the majority of the youth, including young girls, are resorting to the practice. Enditem
