Akwatia decides on Ernest Kumi’s successor

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Polling opened at 7.00 hours GMT on Tuesday in the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region for eligible voters to cast their ballot in the high-stakes by-election, according to reports monitored by Ghana Eye Report.

Some 52,328 registered voters in 119 polling stations are expected to participate in what has been described as a keenly contested by-election between the two leading political parties in the country.

The by-election became possible following the sudden demise of former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on July 7 this year.

Even though three candidates are contesting the by-election, the contest is seen as a two-horse race between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, a miner and philanthropist, and Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Prior to Tues, both aspirants mounted intense political campaigns with the backing of their entire party machinery.

Earlier polls by Global Info Analytics and Sanity Africa suggest a narrow win for NDC’s Baidoo; however, the actual successor will be known by the close of polls at 5 pm on Tuesday.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured of a transparent and credible by-election, while the Ghana Police Service has deployed some 5,500 personnel to maintain law and order in the constituency. End item
