All set for Akwatia by-election on Tuesday

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

All is set for residents of the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region to go to the polls on Tuesday to vote in a by-election.

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), all logistics and measures are in place for the election to proceed as advertised.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) is leaving no stone unturned, as he has deployed about 5,000 security personnel on the ground, with other measures, including ‘prison on wheels,’ introduced to deal with persons who would disturb the peace of the by-election.

Even though three candidates from different political parties are contesting the election, the contest is largely seen by political watchers as a two-horse race between the candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Both major parties, the NDC and the NPP, have ramped up their campaigns. The NDC held a dynamic final rally at the Boadua lorry station on Sunday, August 31.

Meanwhile, the NPP, which held the seat before the unfortunate passing of the Member of Parliament (MP), has been actively campaigning on the ground, with high-profile appearances, including that of their former Vice President, Dr. Bawumia.

Polling projections indicate a tight race. Two recent polls by Global Info Analytics and Sanity Africa both show the NDC candidate, Bernard Bediako, holding a narrow lead over the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu, with margins in the 4–6% range.

Despite having a two-thirds majority in Parliament, the NDC is seeking to snatch the seat from the NPP, while the main opposition is also doing everything possible to maintain its slim 88 seats in the legislative body.

The Akwatia seat became vacant after the demise of Ernest Yaw Kumi recently. End item
