Ashanti NPP Council of Elders urge decent campaign ahead of presidential primary

The Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has appealed to all aspirants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns with decorum as the party heads into its presidential primary, according to a statement on Thursday.

According to the elders, the NPP’s strength lies in its unity, and any campaign rooted in insults, divisions, or personal attacks could weaken the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a statement signed by Victor Owusu, the elders emphasized the need for aspirants to focus on issues, policies, and ideas that will strengthen the party’s chances of recapturing political power from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), rather than engaging in acts that could breed disunity within their ranks.

“We, the members of the NPP in the Ashanti Region Council of Elders, deem it of paramount importance that the internal competition by five of our party members who have filed nominations to bear the flag of the party for the 2028 presidential election,” read the statement.

“However, the above-stated notwithstanding, we of the Ashanti Regional Council of Elders have noted with pain and distress certain grave developments relating to the campaigning in terms of pronouncements and utterances by some presidential flagbearer aspirants and their campaign teams spearheaded by spokespersons, directors of campaigns, and other apparatchiks,” it added.

The council further urged party communicators to show restraint and be guided by the principles of respect, tolerance, and fairness throughout the campaign period. They reminded aspirants that at the end of the primary, only one candidate will emerge as the flagbearer, and the collective goal should be to rally behind that candidate to secure victory for the NPP.

The Ashanti Region, considered the party’s stronghold, plays a critical role in shaping the NPP’s electoral fortunes. The council, therefore, called on delegates to prioritize unity and discipline as the primary draw closer.

The NPP will hold a presidential primary on January 31, 2026, and already five aspirants, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, have filed their nominations to contest.

The rest are Member of Parliament for Abetifi Constituency, Dr. Bryan Acheampong and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. End item
