African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf strongly condemned a deadly terrorist attack in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Zamfara that left at least 50 civilians dead and the abduction of women and children.
In a statement issued on Monday, the chairperson said the attack was “heinous and coordinated.”
Youssouf said the AU unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilians, particularly women and children, as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security and stability.
He expressed the AU’s full solidarity with the Nigerian government and people, extended condolences to the bereaved families, and wished a swift recovery to those injured.
The chairperson called for the immediate, safe and unconditional release of all abducted women and children, and urged a strengthened, coordinated and collective action to protect civilians and prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.
He reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering support for Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity and restore lasting peace.
According to a local lawmaker, the attack reportedly began Thursday evening and continued into Friday morning in Tungan Dutse village, located in the Bukkuyum Local Government Area. Armed men on more than 150 motorcycles stormed the community, firing indiscriminately at residents and setting buildings on fire. The raid left at least 50 people dead, while dozens of women and children were abducted. Enditem
