Delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso East Constituency are voting today, Saturday, February 7, 2026, to elect a parliamentary candidate ahead of the upcoming by-election next month.
The primary is being held to select a replacement for the late Member of Parliament (MP), Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away on January 4, 2026.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Five aspirants are contesting the NDC ticket and include the Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Ramne, the wife of late MP Hajia Amina Adam, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Political Scientist Dr Yakubu Azindow, and Mohammed Sani.

In all, a little over 1,100 delegates is expected to cast their ballots at the Nima Cluster of Schools, the designated voting centre for the constituency.
The contest is widely seen as a closely fought race, with strong competition among the leading contenders.
The outcome of today’s primary will determine the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the by-election in what is considered one of the party’s strongholds in the Greater Accra Region.
The last NDC primary held in the Constituency in 2023 for the 2024 parliamentary election was quite competitive. The breakdown of the results is as follows;
Naser Toure (Late MP): 452 votes (44.93%)
Baba Jamal: 309 votes (30.72%)
Dr Yakubu Azindow: 242 votes (24.06%)
Meanwhile, latest polling trends from Global InfoAnalytics suggest that the widow effect for Hajia Amina Adam is a potent factor that has placed her as the frontrunner in the upcoming contest, giving her a commanding lead over her closest rivals.
According to the data released ahead of the primaries, Hajia Amina Adam commands 58 per cent of voter preference among delegates and party supporters surveyed, positioning her as the favourite to clinch the party’s ticket in the traditionally competitive constituency.
The survey results presented by the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics show a wide margin between Hajia Amina Adam and the rest of the field.
