The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed, as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency next month.
Baba Jamal emerged victorious after a keenly contested primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, securing 431 of valid votes cast by accredited party delegates with Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the later Member of Parliament (MP) polling 399 of the votes.
Constituency Chairman Mohammed Ramme polled 88 votes, while Dr Yakubu Azindow and Najib Sani polled 45 and 1 valid votes respectively.
Baba Jamal will now lead the governing NDC into the Ayawaso East by-election on March 3.
The election was conducted under tight security, with officials of the Electoral Commission and party leadership supervising the process to ensure transparency and fairness.
However, there were reports of alleged vote buying by some of the aspirants as some delegates received flatscreen television sets, motor bicycles, rice, oil and cash.
Moments after being declared the parliamentary candidate elect, Baba Jamal thanked delegates for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to run an inclusive, issue-driven campaign and called on all party supporters to unite behind his candidacy to secure victory for the NDC in the by-election.
The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the passing of the former MP, prompting the Electoral Commission to schedule the by-election for March 3, 2026.
Though an NDC stronghold, Baba Jamal is expected to face a strong contest from the candidates of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), setting the stage for a highly competitive electoral battle in the constituency. Enditem
