Polling is taking place today, Tuesday March 3, 2026, in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election for voters in the constituency to elect a new Member of Parliament (MP).
Over 40,000 registered voters in the constituency are expected to cast ballots from 7.00 a.m.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has assured that all logistics, voting materials, and preparations are in place for a free, fair and transparent election.
The by-election was triggered by the death of the late MP Naser Toure Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who passed away in January 2026.
Among the leading contestants include former High Commissioner to Nigeria Baba Jamal Ahmed Mohammed for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Baba Ali Yusif (NPP) for the opposition the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Other candidates include Ibrahim Iddrisu (Liberal Party) and two independent candidates contesting the seat.
A recent poll by Globalinfo Analytics projected a strong lead for the NDC’s candidate, Baba Jamal, with an estimated 75 % of the vote, and the NPP candidate trailing — although actual results will be known only after votes are counted later today.
The Ghana Police Service deployed tight security to ensure a peaceful voting process.
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) also urged voters and parties to conduct themselves peacefully and without incident
Polling stations are open throughout the day, and results are expected later this evening or overnight once counting is completed. Enditem
