By Francis Kobena Tandoh

A goal in each half gave the Lionesses of England a 2-0 victory over Ghana’s women’s senior football national team, the Black Queens, in an international friendly at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, United Kingdom, late Tuesday.

Having qualified for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Ghanaians went into the game determined to beat the European champions; however, the Lionesses scored an early goal in the 5th minute through Lucia Kendall, giving the hosts the lead.

England, after scoring, continued to pile pressure on Ghana but was unable to increase the scoreline until halftime, as the Ghanaian defense remained resolute, coupled with decent saves by the goalkeeper.

The Lionesses kept the pressure on the Queens, and their efforts paid off as substitute Alessia Russo earned and expertly scored a penalty in the 96th minute to make it 2-0 for England.

England thus ends 2025 with yet another win, while Ghana puts up a resolute performance, which should boost their hopes in the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco and the 2027 World Cup qualification. Enditem
