Burkina Faso to begin Bagre Dam spillage August 27

The government of Burkina Faso has announced that the Bagre Dam will be split effective Wednesday, August 27, 2025, according to a statement cited by Ghana Eye Report on Friday.

In the statement, signed by Kindo Issiaka, Head of Hydraulics at SONABEL (Société Nationale d’Électricité du Burkina Faso), it was disclosed that the dam’s upstream elevation currently stands at 233.98 meters, with a filling rate of 86.38%.

According to the statement, the reservoir level is just 1.02 meters below its maximum operating capacity.

SONABEL indicated that the controlled spillage is necessary to safeguard the dam’s integrity.

It urged all downstream communities and individuals likely to be affected to take the necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, the Kompienega Dam’s upstream elevation stands at 177.66 meters, with a filling rate of 77.26%. Its reservoir level is 2.34 meters below its maximum operating capacity. Enditem
