CAF Confederation Cup: Kotoko loses 1-0 to Wydad

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Kumasi Asante Kotoko lost by 1-0 to Wydad Club of Morocco in the CAF Confederation Cup playoff at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The Ghanaians started the game well determined to pick up all three points and nearly took the lead in the opening minutes.

However, after the initial scare, the visitors took control of the game, creating several decent chances and looking more composed in possession.

Despite some good saves by Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara, Wydad’s pressure eventually paid off after the break.

A corner kick in the 47th minute wasn’t properly dealt with by Kotoko’s defense, allowing an unmarked Wydad player to fire home from close range for the opener.

Camara was sent off for handling the ball outside his penalty area while attempting to block a goal-bound effort.

Reduced to ten men, the Porcupine Warriors tried to mount a response, but their numerical disadvantage affected them as Wydad dominated possession and created several clear chances that could have extended their lead.

Kotoko will play against Wydad in the reverse fixture, the second leg, in Casablanca, Morocco. Enditem
