Cape Verde marks 50 years of independence with national celebrations

Cape Verde celebrated on Saturday the 50th anniversary of its independence from Portuguese colonial rule with a series of commemorations, including a solemn session at the National Assembly.

At the session, President Jose Maria Neves hailed his country’s progress over the past five decades, calling the journey “undoubtedly positive,” but warned of growing global instability.

“The current reality is highly complex, and the international environment is fraught with uncertainties,” Neves said, stressing the need for a coherent policy framework and long-term planning to address future challenges.

Neves cited economic diversification, energy transition, territorial cohesion, digital transformation and social inclusion as national priorities, warning that the country’s economic fragility, worsened by external shocks, remains a key risk.

Events in the capital also included a military parade and a commemorative gathering.  Enditem
