Cape verde to provide housing, financial aid to storm-affected citizens

The central government will supply housing and financial aid by the displaced people on Cape Verde’s island of Sao Vicente after a storm claimed nine lives and displaced thousands, an official announced Tuesday.

The homeless people will be accommodated in apartments in Ribeira de Juliao, a village in the central part of the island, and will be exempted from paying rent during their first year of residence, Vitoria Verissimo, spokesperson for the Cape Verde Crisis Office, said at a press conference.

She added that the government is committed to rehabilitating approximately 300 homes damaged by the storm.

Currently, a total of 74 families of 255 people are staying in temporary shelters on the island as they have either lost all their possessions or have their houses rendered uninhabitable, Minister of Family, Inclusion and Social Development Fernando Elisio Freire said.

According to the minister, the government will also provide emergency aid of 30,000 escudos (about 315 U.S. dollars) per month for three months to the affected individuals, and a non-repayable grant of 50,000 escudos (about 526 U.S. dollars) to traders and small farmers impacted by the storm.

Micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses will receive financial aid ranging from 150,000 to 500,000 escudos (about 1,577 to 5,256 U.S. dollars), while medium-sized enterprises will receive between 500,000 and 1.2 million escudos (about 5,256 to 12,614 U.S. dollars), depending on verified losses, he added.  Enditem
