Chiefs urged to help combat Galamsey

The Chief of Agona Kwanyako in the Central Region and Kyidomhen of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, Odeefo Dr. Ampim Darko V, has admonished traditional rulers across the country not to rest on their oars but to join the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which has become a national canker.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Akwambo celebration at Agona Kwanyako in the Central Region, Odeefo Dr. Darko expressed grave concern about the menace, which, according to him, poses a serious threat not only to the environment but also to the health risk to the entire nation.

The activities of illegal mining have led to the pollution of major water bodies in the country, a situation that has led to the scarcity of potable drinking water for many Ghanaians.

He blamed the situation on the issuance of mining permits for individuals to mine in the country’s forest reserves, where these rivers have their sources.

The Agona Kwanyako Chief mentioned the lack of basic social amenities, including a decent place of convenience, a health facility, and a motorable bridge over the Ayensu River to link the town to Awutu Bontorase and its surrounding areas to ease trading in these areas.

The Central Regional Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Richard Kofi Asiedu, a native of the town, promised to provide building materials such as cement and iron rods towards the construction of an ultramodern community center for the town, as well as foot the labor cost of the project.

He further disclosed that he is liaising with other individuals and organizations to construct a 3-bedroom, 4-unit, one-story building, Master’s Bungalow, for the Kwanyako Senior High School to accommodate some of the teachers who had to travel from other jurisdictions daily to the school.
