The Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) has received an application from the Government of Chile to become an EITI implementing country. The application will be reviewed by the EITI Board’s Outreach and Candidature Committee and subsequently by the EITI Board.
“We warmly welcome Chile’s application to join the EITI,” said Mark Robinson, EITI Executive Director. “Given the scale of exploration and production of critical minerals in Chile, which are vital to the global energy transition, the country’s membership would mark an important milestone for transparency in the extractive sector. Multi-stakeholder dialogue and greater transparency through the EITI can support Chile in addressing governance challenges, to the benefit of its citizens.”
Chile is the world’s largest copper producer and the second largest producer of lithium, with the extractive sector playing a central role in its economy. The country first announced its intention to join the EITI in June 2023. Through EITI implementation, Chile aims to strengthen public debate and governance of its extractive industries, drawing on lessons from best practices in EITI implementing countries.
The country’s National Lithium Strategy, launched in April 2023 by President Gabriel Boric, sets out policies to support sustainable lithium extraction and strengthen the state’s participation in the sector. It includes a commitment to join the EITI to “guarantee the highest possible level of transparency and probity in all mining industries, including lithium, in line with the most stringent international standards.”
Since then, Chile has taken steps to meet the EITI’s sign-up requirements, including establishing a multi-stakeholder group with representatives from government, industry and civil society, and adopting a 2025-2027 work plan. In January 2024, the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco), acting as EITI National Coordinator, issued a public call for stakeholders to participate in the multi-stakeholder group.
If the application is approved by the EITI Board, Chile will become the 11th country in Latin America and the Caribbean to implement the EITI Standard, and the 55th globally. Enditem
