Constitutional Review Committee presents report to Mahama

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) on Monday presented its final report formally to President John Dramani Mahama, marking a major step in efforts to review and strengthen Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

At a brief ceremony at the Presidency, the chair of the committee, Prof. H. Kwesi Prempeh, said the report captures wide-ranging views gathered through nationwide consultations with citizens, traditional authorities, civil society groups, political parties, and professional bodies.

The recommendations, the committee noted, are aimed at deepening democratic governance, improving accountability, and addressing gaps identified in the implementation of the Constitution over the years.

Key among the recommendations, the Chairman emphasized, is the extension of the four-year term to five years while maintaining the two-term tenure limit to a president.

President Mahama commended the committee for its work and assured that the report would be carefully studied. He indicated that the government would engage stakeholders on the recommendations and outline a clear roadmap for implementation, in line with constitutional procedures.

The Constitutional Review Committee was tasked to assess the operation of the 1992 Constitution and propose reforms to enhance efficiency in governance, protect fundamental rights, and strengthen state institutions. Enditem
