Cote d’Ivoire adjusts cocoa crop seasons

Cote d’Ivoire has adjusted its cocoa crop calendar, according to information released by the country’s Coffee and Cocoa Board on Friday.

The main crop season, previously running from October to March, will now take place from Sept. 1 to Feb. 28, while the mid-crop season, formerly scheduled from April to September, will run from March 1 to Aug. 31.

The adjustment is expected to facilitate the resumption of cocoa bean purchases by multinational companies and local exporters, after they had significantly reduced purchasing activities in recent months due to earlier impacts.

The earlier start of the mid-crop season is expected to help revive the entire cocoa production and processing chain and accelerate the marketing of cocoa beans. Under the new arrangement, farmers are expected to sell their output within a few weeks, whereas many had previously faced several months without viable marketing channels.

According to the Ivorian Press Agency, the cocoa sector in Cote d’Ivoire involves about 1.2 million producers and provides livelihoods for nearly eight million people.  Enditem
